High Performance Feed Screws

Double Barrier Screw

The barrier screw designs are useful in generating high throughput and excellent product quality. However, due to its inherent asymmetry, processors have reported an alarming amount of screw and/or barrel wear while in service. SPR's new Double Barrier (U.S. Patent No. 4,472,059) now provides improved production rate (compared to the barrier screw) and longer service life. (Figure 1).

SPR's computerized screw cutting equipment makes the manufacture of this complex screw design possible. The Double Barrier screw incorporates a unique variable lead section in order to make room for the second set of flights. This insures that the pumping rate of your screw is not compromised by the increased melting capacity of the barrier.

SDSĘ -2

The SDSĘ-2 screw (U.S. Patent No. 3,924,842) moves your single screw extruder into high gear at reduced shear and melt temperatures. Its unique design adds 50% more length to your barrel. Only 10% of your infeed actually passes through the second screw housed inside the first. This eliminates the problem of high extrudate temperatures associated with longer screws, while simultaneously maintaining high production rate and product quality. (Figure 2).

Utilizing the successful "screw within a screw" concept to increase the melting rate of the extruder, The SDSĘ-2 goes beyond that. We make full use of our state-of-the-art computerized machining capabilities and include a variable lead design which allows you to feed more material than with conventional square pitch screws.

An additional feature incorporates double flights, balancing the solids drain with the return of melt from the inner screw. This reduces the incidence of flight wear normally associated with most barrier and many fluted type mixing screws.
